Setting the scene

Off the beaten path in an undisclosed part of America are two young men sitting in a diner with distinctive Art Deco stylings. Various paraphernalia on their person allude to their personal lives such as photographs and letters.

The surrounding interior is more akin to a bar and were it not for the startling morning sunlight pouring through the full windows one may be forgiven for thinking it a mere diner. A peculiar phenomenon is occurring where the sunlight cuts the room in half. This contrast makes the side bathed in light very alluring. Curiously no one is sitting in that half or acknowledging it at all. After the immediacy of the sunlight subsides you’d be remiss for not noticing the mess in the shade.

Tables and chairs are strewn about as if some sort of fight recently took place and behind in the corner sleeps a Sergeant, cap covering his face. The hum of the wireless talks of people heading west to avoid the Dust Bowl... Outside the window is a long stretch of dry ground and all that can be seen is a hint of a road and some rocks in the distance. Trailing away nearby into the horizon is a railway track although it looks rather run down.

How anyone came to be here is a mystery.
